It says on p. 223 of CRB1

The Reach bonus can, however, be a double-edged sword:

• If the character with the reach bonus fails his Opposed Test, his adversary can then exploit this to close the distance between them. The character’s weapon will then become much more difficult to wield at close quarters.

In such cases, the Reach bonus converts to a penalty.

However, for how long?

until the character with the reach bonus can move away from his adversary woith a retreat action for example.
